Non speaking does not equal Non thinking!
S2C is a method developed by American SLP Elizabeth Vosseller who is based out of the Growing Kids Therapy Centre in Herndon, Virginia. The S2C practitioner works with the speller to coach their gross motor, using the shoulder and arm to point to letters first on a stencil letterboard and as accuracy is obtained they move through to laminate and keyboards. S2C is delivered through well researched and interesting lesson topics in order to keep the speller engaged and to offer them new insights and information. The speller first answers known, then semi open questions before moving onto open questions. Open questions mean the answer is formed from an opinion or thought related to the lesson and eventually the speller becomes "fluent" or conversational.

International Association for Spelling as communication
I-ASC is the organisation that was developed to ensure global access to effective communication for nonspeaking people. for more information on S2C, access to lessons, real stories of success head to their website www.i-asc.org
In April 2025 we had our first 'Spellers Camp". Spellers from all around NZ joined in on a 3 day 2 night camp in the beautiful Pirongia Forest Park. SportNZ and First Step Outdoors sponsored the event and myself and my son Owen feature in the video. We hope you enjoy and get some inspiration as well.
Looking for more inspiration? There is a documentary on You tube (free to watch) called SPELLERS which follows the lives of many open and fluent spellers in the USA. It will give you an idea of what to expect and the possibilities of your speller. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h1rcLyznK0&t=563s
